Collection consists primarily of Fielding's study notes for Life and Works of Thomas Sully and Life Portraits of Washington. It includes 273 photographs of Sully portraits that correspond to the catalogue in Life Works of Thomas Sully; an incomplete set of proof pages from Life Works with comments made by Fielding; 23 letters from Lawrence Park to Fielding concerning Gilbert Stuart portraits; 14 letters from Thomas B. Clarke about Stuart's portraits of George Washington; 125 pieces of correspondence from various individuals and galleries mostly pertaining to portraits of George Washington; a set of clippings, photographs, pages from gallery catalogs, and notes on American artists; a scrapbook with pictures from catalogs relating to European artists; 190 photographs of Washington portraits with notes that correspond to items listed in Life Portraits of Washington; 180 photographs, notes, and engravings that address Washington portraits done by unknown artists or that are of questionable attribution; proof pages for Life Portraits with some clippings about the book; and finally, an annotated copy of Fielding's Catalogue of Engraved Work of David Edwin, with miscellaneous notes and letters about it.

This collection is a compilation of Park's extensive correspondence, for the period 1910 to 1924, with museum directors, portrait owners, authors, publishers, photographers, art connoisseurs, and a variety of scholarly institutions concerning his work in the field of colonial art. Included are letters on the value of specific works, letters with detailed descriptions of portraits, letters on the compilation of photographs of old Worcester views (with which Park became involved in 1924), letters on the advisability of unearthing the old gravestones on Worcester's common. There are also many photographs of portraits collected by Park and by Clarence Saunders Brigham (1877-1963).

Correspondence; photographs; annotated volumes; clippings from magazines, newspapers, exhibition and auction sales catalogues; and notes, narratives and some writing drafts document John Hill Morgan's research on George Washington portraits and other early American works. Contains approximately 500 black & white photos, as well as hundreds of additional images of Washington portraits in clippings and postcards. The bulk of the collection is Morgan's research and correspondence for his 1931 book Life Portraits of George Washington and Their Replicas, which he co-authored with Mantle Fielding. The provenance, condition, ownership and attribution of the portraits are documented in research files that Morgan continued to update after the book's publication.
