Mathews recounts the random incidents and soul-searching that inspired a reluctant party boy to devote his life to a cause, without ever abandoning his sense of mischief and fun. As the irreverent force behind the colorful crusades carried out by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), one of the most effective and enduring pressure groups in the world, he has strutted naked before a fur convention in Tokyo, halted GM's use of animals in crash tests by storming the carmaker's float in the Rose Parade dressed as a rabbit, and crashed a fashion show in Milan dressed as a priest. With self-deprecating wit and candor, Mathews reveals all the edgy details of his unorthodox coming-of-age and equally outrageous career.--From publisher description.</summary></citation><citation><uniqueHoldings>206</uniqueHoldings><holdings>206</holdings><numEditions>1</numEditions><oclcnum>ocn237879296</oclcnum><exprid>sw237879296:lccn-n85-378392</exprid><isFiction>False</isFiction><recordType>book</recordType><date>2003</date><languages count="1"><lang code="eng" count="1"/></languages><dates different="1" first="2003" last="2003"/><creator>United States</creator><title>People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals</title><summary>People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, also known as PETA, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the education of the public about issues concerning animal rights.</summary></citation><citation><uniqueHoldings>191</uniqueHoldings><holdings>192</holdings><numEditions>2</numEditions><oclcnum>ocn173298297</oclcnum><exprid>sw173298297:lccn-n85-378392</exprid><isFiction>False</isFiction><recordType>visu</recordType><date>2008</date><languages count="1"><lang code="eng" count="2"/></languages><dates different="2" first="2007" last="2008"/><title>I am an animal the story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA</title><genres><genre count="192" norm="documentary films">Documentary films</genre></genres><summary>Candid and introspective look at the beliefs and motives of Ingrid Newkirk, founder and leader of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Membership in People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world's largest animal rights organization, for instance, has grown from fewer than 100 members in 1980 (Plous, 1991), to more than 1,800,000 &quot;members and supporters&quot; today (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, n.d.b), and donations to the organization indicate a similar upward trend (Charity Navigator, 2006). At the same time, the influence of the movement has been felt by animal users, consumers, and the government, and continues to be relevant to this day. From early campaigns leading to a considerable decrease in the numbers of animals used in product testing (Jasper and Nelkin, 1992) and a plummet in sales of fur coats (Singer, 2003), to more recent victories including concessions by McDonald's, Burger King, and other restaurants regarding their animal welfare policies (Martin, 2007), and a spate of initiatives passed at the state level banning or curtailing particular animal uses (Lubinski, 2003), the U.S. animal rights movement has had an effect on business practices, on the law, and on the nation's consciousness. Additionally, a minority faction of the movement has engaged in crimes in an effort to bring about animal liberation, resulting in millions of dollars in damage to animal use industries (Southern Poverty Law Center, 2002).</summary></citation><citation><uniqueHoldings>1</uniqueHoldings><holdings>1</holdings><numEditions>1</numEditions><oclcnum>ocn436089290</oclcnum><exprid>sw157046226:lccn-n85-378392</exprid><isFiction>False</isFiction><recordType>book</recordType><date>2007</date><languages count="1"><lang code="eng" count="1"/></languages><dates different="1" first="2007" last="2007"/><creator>Danis, Krista M</creator><title>Dismembering the animal rights movement : PETA and the consumption of women's bodies</title></citation><citation><uniqueHoldings>1</uniqueHoldings><holdings>1</holdings><numEditions>1</numEditions><oclcnum>ocn428980339</oclcnum><exprid>sw428980339:lccn-n85-378392</exprid><isFiction>False</isFiction><recordType>book</recordType><date>2008</date><languages count="1"><lang code="eng" count="1"/></languages><dates different="1" first="2008" last="2008"/><title>Newkirk, Ingrid</title></citation><citation><uniqueHoldings>1</uniqueHoldings><holdings>1</holdings><numEditions>1</numEditions><oclcnum>ocn374292932</oclcnum><exprid>sw374292932:lccn-n85-378392</exprid><isFiction>False</isFiction><recordType>book</recordType><date>2005</date><languages count="1"><lang code="eng" count="1"/></languages><dates different="1" first="2005" last="2005"/><creator>Mersey, Rachel Davis</creator><title>Got rights?
